What are my rights? - Non-unionized - Just Termination - Dishonesty
If an employee has been found to have committed an act of dishonesty, this is one of the most clearcut situations where employment can be terminated for just cause, with no compensation payable to the employee. The classic situation is to be caught with one's "hands in the cookie jar". Typical scenarios will involve submitting false expense accounts or pilfering. The line between what constitutes an act of dishonesty or merely a less culpable act of incompetence is not always easy to draw. The higher up an employee is in the corporate hierarchy, the more essential it is that the employee maintain the employer's trust. Therefore, even the most minor act of dishonesty may result in termination for just cause for a higher level employee.
